One of the most inhospitable landscapes on Earth is Danakil Depression where evaporation of an inland sea created the salt flats. Afar people mine it in order to make a living by selling the salt to merchants going on camel caravans to the nearby markets.
The average wage per day of one salt miner is roughly 500 birr, 17 usd while the average temperature reaches 40+ degrees.
